Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is being accused of attempting to rape a masseuse at the Hotel Lucia in Portland, Oregon. The Nobel Peace Prize winner “unequivocally’ denied the allegations by the woman.

“Mr. Gore unequivocally and emphatically denied this accusation when he first learned of its existence three years ago,” spokeswoman Kalee Kreider said in a statement [...]

Insanity is like dishonesty. Just as little lies lead to bigger lies, the wacky interpretation of the 14th Amendment that grants US citizenship to foreigners who happen to be born here has led to full-blown rubber room lunacy. The latest paroxysm of preposterousness — Hotel Anchor Baby:

When Eric Holder testified before the House Judiciary Committee last month, Rep. Lamar Smith asked Eric Holder whether "radical Islam" might have had something to do with the three notable terrorist attempts in the United States within the past year. Holder came off as a clown. Radical Islam? Don't say it, man!

Is it polite to laugh at the President of the United States? I admit that I went through the “someone needs a hug” phase.  But his unrelenting arrogance killed that rather quickly.  So now I see something like a rat going through a maze:  He can smell the cheese but keeps on finding dead ends, so he backs up and tries another path.

USA Today is reporting the good news that Adam Gadahn, the American who sold his soul to Islamofascism, has been arrested in Pakistan:

Pakistani intelligence officers say they have arrested Adam Gadahn, the American-born spokesman for al-Qaeda.

Two officers say Gadahn was arrested in the city of Karachi in recent days.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The Blog Prof links to Chris Horner's article at Pajamas Media that details how Barack Obama, George Soros, and wind energy lobbyists colluded to hide the details of two economic studies that showed the wind energy programs in Spain and Denmark didn't help the economy and create jobs as the president said they did.

Lindsey Graham is clearly working on a deal with the Obama administration to close the detention facility at Guantanamo and move the terrorist detainees to the United States. It is a terrible idea in itself and Senator Graham cannot possibly secure any consideration from the Obama administration that would justify it.

The deficit of the FY2011 United States Federal Budget – $1.56 trillion – will be the biggest budgetary deficit ever. Several conservative commentators have already presented their proposals on how to reduce federal spending. Admirably, these proposals do not postulate a reduction of defense spending nor the closure of any defense programs. But unfortunately, some libertarian organizations, [...]

Last night, the White House let leak a trial balloon (if you'll pardon the pun) -- top aides are working on reversing the decision to try the 9/11 conspirators in federal court, and giving them back to the military tribunals set up under the Bush administration. This would be a stunning reversal, as Obama and several of his top advisors -- chief among them Attorney General Eric Holder -- had made such a stink out of giving them a fair trial, and then hanging them.

Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has directed enrichment of a portion of that country's stockpile of uranium to 20 percent. Experts regard this as an important step forward for Iran's nuclear weapons program. The reaction of Defense Secretary Robert Gates seems significant:

At a news conference with French Defense Minister Herve Morin, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates praised President Barack Obama's attempts to engage the Islamic Republic diplomatically and chided Tehran for not reciprocating.

For eight years, we all had to suffer through the endless bleats of how the Bush administration (or, more commonly, the "Bush/Cheney/Haliburton administration") had eroded our rights, had pillaged the Bill of Rights, and had in general made poopy all over the Constitution.

Now, though, it's actually starting to happen, and the silence is deafening.

With the announcement that the 9/11 conspirators we've captured will be tried in civilian courts,a precedent that has huge ramifications.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has upheld the conviction of Zacarias Moussaoui. The court -- in an opinion by Judge Traxler joined by Judges Gregory and Shedd -- rejected the terrorist's claim that he should be retried or resentenced because he was deprived of his constitutional rights.

Moussaoui was sentenced to life imprisonment. My understanding is that he was one holdout juror's vote away from the death penalty.

In his interview with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday yesterday, Obama administration Deputy National Security Adviser John Brennan defended the administration's treatment of Umar Abdulmutallab as a criminal defendant rather than an enemy combatant. The questions culminated in this exchange:

WALLACE: Just briefly, what's the downside of treating him as an enemy combatant?

I was sitting at my table this morning, looking over my schedule for the day, when Mister Reality came by, poured himself a coffee and took a seat.

"I suppose you are feeling pleased with yourself this morning." he began. When I said nothing but raised an eyebrow, he clarified. "Politically, I mean."

"Well,", I ventured. "New Jersey and Virginia were nice results, though I have to say I was cheering for Hoffman in New York."

Peace is not a process. Peace exists when one of two conditions is met: 1) two groups of people have no wish to kill one another (e.g., the U.S. and Canada), or 2) one or both of the groups would like to kill the other, but is deterred or otherwise prevented from doing so (e.g., the Cold War). In neither case is a "process" typically involved. Negotiation, unlike peace, is indeed a process. But negotiations, even when they lead to a treaty or agreement, cannot bring peace unless one of the above conditions is also met. (See Munich, Oslo, countless others).

Attorney General Eric Holder yesterday invoked the state secrets privilege in connection with a case titled Shubert, et al. v. Barack Obama, et al.. The Shubert case is pending in federal district court in San Francisco. Assuming the court agrees with the Obama administration's position, the case will be dismissed on the ground that it cannot proceed without a danger that vitally important national security secrets will be revealed.

Here's what President Obama said yesterday,

"First of all, no one is talking about a government takeover health care plan," Obama said after he took the podium for the town hall meeting near the produce section.

He insisted he has "tried to say this over and over again - if you are happy with your health care, if you are happy with your doctor, we are not going to force you to change.

The US government will "consult" with GM to replace its board of directors. We all know who the government will put on this board. UAW heads, environmentalists, and others who don't give know anything about making a profit. They're more concerned about pushing their agenda and telling us what to drive.

US Department of Transportation has issued new and tougher MPG standards:

The U.S. Department of Transportation has ordered automakers to increase fuel mileage in cars and light trucks to an average of 27.3 mpg by 2011.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said changes to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, or CAFE standards, are important steps to achieving energy independence and bringing more fuel-efficient vehicles to market.

It's official--according to the National Bureau of Economic Advisers, the United States is in recession and has been since December 2007. That puts the current downturn on pace to surpass the 16-month recessions in 1981-82 and 1973-75 as the longest since World War II. It will almost certainly be Publication: The American Conservative

Ever since the 1970's one of the main goals of the Democratic party has been to reduce the amount energy consumed by the United States. This is not a bad idea in and of itself, but its urgency has always been ideological, rather than market-based. Cheap oil prices and Reagan-era deregulation foiled the Democrats' original efforts, but now, "global warming" has provided a convenient reason to continue, and expand, this effort.
